How does Japanese Meridian Therapy Differ to other styles of Needling?

Japanese Needling and Meridian Therapy is well known for it's gentle and non-invasive treatments techniques;

Japanese needling has developed over 1400 years in close proximity to massage and moxibustion. As a result, great importance is placed on diagnosis, palpation and careful location of reactive points. In Japanese needling and Meridian Therapy, the skin is seen as the interface by which information is received and conveyed to the body as a whole. This means the needles are inserted in a shallow and painless method to get the maximum result. Patients can be confident that the treatment is gentle and nurturing as well as being effective.

Meridian Therapy, the more traditional approach to Japanese needling, employs very gentle needle techniques so it is especially suited to the treatment of the very young, weak or sensitive patient. Meridian Therapy emphasizes the treatment of the cause of disease (root treatment) while also addressing the symptoms (branch treatment).

Key Differences

Shallow needle insertion - Japanese Meridian therapy sees the energetic system of the body as being very close to the skin. Because the energetic system of the body is so superficial, deep needling is not required and is seen to compromise the efficiency of treatment.

Thinner needles - as explained above, because the energetic system of the body is so sensitive and superficial, thick and sometimes painful needling is not required to bring about strong and lasting changes within the body.

Emphasis on Palpation - Those trained in Japanese-style needling take a hands-ons approach to diagnosis. This involves pulse diagnosis, palpation of the abdomen, meridians and reactive areas on the body. Practitioners will test and retest many areas of the body during the course of treatment to assess and validate the effectiveness of treatment as it is occuring.

All of these differences make Japanese Meridian Therapy a living and evolving treatment. Because of it's gentle nature it is especially suited to the treatment of young children, weak and sensitive patients.
