Emerging in Spring

It feels symbolic writing my first ever blog

on the verge of Spring. Spring is always the marker of blooming and new beginnings. My winter has been 10 years long. Ten years of treating, continuous learning and observation in my clinical practise. After all of this watching, learning and gathering of information, I am opening my offerings in an online way and the timing couldn’t be better.

Honouring seasonal change is a fundamental pillar of East Asian Medicine. Despite our constant forgetting, we are not separate to our environment, and so the seasons become important markers and descriptions of our human experience.

Spring is ruled by the Liver and Gallbladder. These two organs belong to the element of Wood in East Asian Medicine.

Spring is all about embodying gentle emergence, detoxification, birth, growth and flexibility.

Gentle emergence: After taking winter slowly and being inward with ideas it is tempting to want to launch full force into action at the first glimpse of sun. The Yang seasons comprise half the year, what we wish to complete in this period of activity can happen gradually. If we want to last the distance and bring our ideas into fruition they need us to grow steadily – any plant that blooms too early is at risk of an early spring frost.

Detoxification: Winter has been a time of heavier foods, moving slowly and gathering. To fully embrace the vital yang energies Spring now needs us to lighten the load. Embracing fresh produce and more movement can help.

Birth: Many creatures are now either birthing or building nests, the warmer and more hospitable weather is their cue to bring forth life. Projects that have been gestating over the winter can fully embody this budding yang energy and utilise it for new creations.

Flexibility: Like the physical wood of nature, a tree can only survive harsh winds, rains and snow if it can bend and move with the storm. Yoga, floor stretches and taking regular movement breaks will help our bodies acclimate to Spring.
